Make Me A Filipina CEO

An informal Kwentuhan (storytelling) session (a la "The View") among kindred spirits of how being bi-cultural is both a challenge and an advantage in the global workplace. Panelists do not own their companies or related to the owners. They are in senior-level management of large organizations they manage or have been appointed to publicly traded companies and are Most Influential Filipina Women in the World (Global FWN100™) Awardees.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: The Conversation will begin with a moderator’s overview of what CEOs and senior management do, how Filipina women leaders create change through their businesses, the roles they play in the global workplace, and how they have created their own global imprint.

Our speakers will engage in a bold conversation on what it’s like to climb the corporate ladder, how to create a path to the C-Suite, and the challenges of a woman of color in business today after #MeToo and George Floyd's murder. Summit Day 2: CLOSING KEYNOTE: DISRUPTING your body with Capoeira: Finding Freedom & New Possibilities

DISRUPTING your body with Capoeira: Finding Freedom & New Possibilities
In this session, I will share about my journey in practicing capoeira, an art form developed by enslaved Africans brought to Brazil and combines martial art, music, and dance. Historically, capoeira was a form of resistance that continues to be a symbol of and tool for advancing social justice today. Through capoeira, I found a way to express myself creatively, learned a new language, and have had a practice that pushes my mind and body, while uplifting my spirit like no other.

Personally, capoeira symbolizes all my hopes, fears and dreams and serves as a way for me to face and conquer them, one game at a time. As physical as capoeira is, the mental aspect is as important and allows any person to find their unique path in it, regardless of age, physical ability, and other identities. My goals in this session are to introduce the audience to a new art form and hopefully inspire them to explore capoeira and other practices that they may never otherwise consider.

Leah Lupisan Laxamana is a community advocate driven by her commitment to empower global communities and make a positive difference at every opportunity. She is a Kapampangan born and raised in Manila whose home has been San Francisco, CA in the last 20+ years. Leah has worked across sectors including philanthropy, tech, and has served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras. She is currently at Faithful Fools, a live-work community in the Tenderloin neighborhood dedicated to fostering personal and social change through action and ongoing reflection. Leah loves to travel, being outdoors, and all forms of movement. She has been dancing since childhood and practicing capoeira since the mid-2000s.

THE GRÉMIO LITERÁRIO was created in 1846 by royal charter of Queen D. Thirty years later the Grémio settled in its present facilities, the Loures Palace, in the Chiado quarter, the elegant centre of the intellectual and social Lisbon society, a characteristic building in the local romantic architecture, with decorated rooms, a rich library, restaurant and a precious garden dated 1844 overlooking the river Tagus and the Moorish castle.

SUMMIT Day 3: Lisbon Night Out! Free Night: Dinner on your own or with your KUMAREs
Free Night to Explore Lisbon's Shopping, Cultural Sights and Dinner Spots with your KUMARES!

Here is a recommendation on where to enjoy the late afternoon/evening but note this is not a FWN sponsored activity.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/AttractionsNear-g189158-d195824-Chiado-Lisbon_Lisbon_District_Central_Portugal.html

Neighborhood: Chiado

This is the fashionable shopping district in Lisbon.

The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints.

It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having his usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to.

You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent.

A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

SUMMIT Day 4: State of the World: Climate Change, Women and Justice
State of the World: Climate Change, Women and Justice
  • Climate Change is a planetary phenomenon that has been impacting the world and its effects are being shaped by pervasive and entrenched gender inequality.
  • Climate change is inherently a justice issue—those who have contributed least to its causes, will suffer most from its effects.
  • Investing in women is the best way to mitigate the destructive forces of climate change.

Christine Amour-Levar is a French-Swiss-Filipina Philanthropist, Adventurer, Author, Human Rights & Sustainability Advocate. She has built a global career as a Marketing & Communications expert and Social Entrepreneur intent on solving some of the world's most pressing issues. A passionate champion of female empowerment and environmental conservation, Christine co-founded Women on a Mission (WOAM) and founded HER Planet Earth, two award-wining, not-for-profit organisations that take all-female teams on pioneering expeditions, as a way to support worthy causes.

HER Planet Earth's primary objective is to raise awareness and funds for underprivileged women affected by climate change, while WOAM aims to empower women who have been subjected to violence and abuse. These challenging expeditions involve trekking across remote and untouched places around the world, from the Arctic Circle to Antarctica, from mountains in the Himalayas, to deserts in the Middle East and Africa.
Today, Christine is an ESG Advisor with Top Tier Impact, a global ecosystem of impact investors and sustainability leaders who are tackling the critical challenges of our time. She is also a Board Member, Consultant and Advisor to several purpose-led organisations in the Social Impact, Fintech, Sustainability and Cellular Agriculture spaces.

SUMMIT Day 4: State of the World: Politics and Civil Rights
State of the World: Politics and Civil Rights

Moderator: Lorna Kapunan, Esq.

How do Filipina Women use their Pinay Power? What did it take for Filipina Women to decide to run for office? Examining the obstacles and successes in greater depth about winning, taking charge, finding a sponsor vs a mentor, creating and nurturing your political network, being political savvy, networking the political hierarchy, managing the campaign and dealing with women's and civil rights issues in your respective geographic areas. A discussion of the many pieces of the puzzle to be mindful of how to reach your full potential as elected officials.

This is an informal Kwentuhan session (a la "The View'') among kindred spirits of how being bi-cultural (for those who live outside of the Philippines) and being a woman in a male-dominated political field.
