DISRUPTING your body with Capoeira: Finding Freedom & New Possibilities
In this session, I will share about my journey in practicing capoeira, an art form developed by enslaved Africans brought to Brazil and combines martial art, music, and dance. Historically, capoeira was a form of resistance that continues to be a symbol of and tool for advancing social justice today. Through capoeira, I found a way to express myself creatively, learned a new language, and have had a practice that pushes my mind and body, while uplifting my spirit like no other.

Personally, capoeira symbolizes all my hopes, fears and dreams and serves as a way for me to face and conquer them, one game at a time. As physical as capoeira is, the mental aspect is as important and allows any person to find their unique path in it, regardless of age, physical ability, and other identities. My goals in this session are to introduce the audience to a new art form and hopefully inspire them to explore capoeira and other practices that they may never otherwise consider.
